RCMI Infectious and Global Diseases Research Program

The goal of the Infectious and Global Diseases Research Program (IGDRP) is to enhance the research capabilities for multidisciplinary collaborations that will lead to translational research in infectious and global diseases. The strategy to accomplish this goal is to provide access and support to advanced specialized technology that will enhance research capacity and promote activities that will improve interactions between clinicians and basic scientists and stimulate translational research. The IGDRP sponsors an “Infectious Diseases and Global Health Disparities Network” and a seminar series offered by worldwide recognized scientists to further enhance interactions between scientists working in infectious diseases within and outside Puerto Rico.

  • Biorad Gel Doc System ( Gel imaging system )

    "The Biorad Gel Doc system complemented with a charge coupled device (CCD) camera serve to capture images in real time, accurately position and focus the image and acquire photos of any type of gel. This system also has the Quantity One software to acquire images that can be optimized, annotate, analyze and print acquired pictures."

  • BioRad iCycler ( Thermal cycler )

    "The i-Cycler is also used to run PCR reactions, reverse transcription assays and ligation reactions."

  • BioRad Microplate Reader ( Microplate reader )

    "This microplate reader measures the absorbance of the contents in the wells of 96-well microtitration plates. It can perform single or dual wavelength measurements. This microplate can be controlled by the Microplate Manager Software program for protocol programming and data analysis."

  • CHEF-DR III system ( Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis system )

    "The CHEF-DR III system separates large and small DNA fragments. DNAs from 100 bases to over 10 megabases (mb) may be resolved."

  • Eppendorf Centrifuge 5810R ( Centrifuge )

    The 5810R centrifuge can be used to spin 1.5/2.0ml tubes, 15 ml and 50 ml tubes and 96 well plates. The temperature range of this centrifuge is from 9ºC to +40ºC.

  • Fluorescence Microscope ( Microscope )

    "The Nikon E800 is a fixed-stage upright microscope configured to image in transmitted light, DIC, and epifluorescence modes. This microscope also has digital camera Spot RI and Metamorph software for pictures acquisition."

    "The 96-well Veriti thermal cycler is used to run PCR reactions, reverse transcription assays and quick ligations. This equipment has a color touch-screen and intuitive interface, plus VeriFlex™ Blocks—six independent temperature blocks— for increased flexibility and precision."

  • VWR Incubator ( Incubator )

    "For routine incubation of Microplates and culture flasks the temperature range is from 25oC to 43oC."

    "Clone Manager Software is a computer program used for in silico cloning (= cloning simulation), enzymatic digestions, sequence analysis, construct designs, operations and graphic map drawing.
